2. How well does our mental health expert sleep?

[An interview with Beatrix Michels-Grötzsch]

In general, would you say that you sleep well?

Sometimes I sleep well, and sometimes I sleep worse. The nice thing is that I actually take advantage of my opportunities to sleep better again. So, for me, there are nights or times when I don't sleep so well, but overall, I sleep happily and well.

Are you more of a late riser or a short sleeper? About how many hours a night do you sleep?

I'm actually a light sleeper. I get by really well on five or six hours, and then I feel refreshed and awake. I believe I get a very restful night's sleep and can get by with fewer hours because I can relax mentally and calm down very well in those few hours.

Are you more of a lark or an owl?

I'm a night owl, often awake at night because I have really good ideas in the evenings and at night and I'm good at working. So, I'm a bit of an owl in that respect. Waking up in the morning actually means, at first, "Oh, is the night over?" But then I immediately get that feeling of "I'm looking forward to the day," and then I get up very quickly.

But I'm more of the type of person who needs time to rest before waking up. So, I'm awake and looking forward to the day, but then I want to have a quiet cup of coffee and be with myself.

Do you have a morning routine to help you start your day better?

My motivation is my routine when I get up in the morning. What positive things will the day bring me? What do I have to accomplish today? Or what will I be able to experience today? What am I looking forward to? And that's how I start the day energetically, and then there's the taste of coffee. That's my Morning ritual.

Do you drink a lot of coffee or caffeine during the day?

I love the taste of coffee and know, of course, that it can be a bit of a pick-me-up, which means that I often have to use my own methods to calm down in the evening. I claim, caffeine Not needing it, but simply liking it, and telling myself: Okay, I'm going to take some time for myself. I'm going to sit down away from my desk and then leisurely drink my coffee. It's something that's part of my routine. So, it's not just something I drink in between meals; coffee is a pleasure for me. I sometimes have it two or three times a day.

You are a positive person, have you always been so positive?

I am actually a happy person. I was a happy child, a happy teenager, a content adult. And I've always had this happiness, this positive thinking within me. Of course, there are times when I forget that life is beautiful, and then I really try to control my thoughts and always look for the solution and the problem. I try to allow myself to be happy, content, and healthy. And I'm allowed to complain and moan now and then. But for me, there's this saying: Moaning with a happy ending! So, I'm allowed to complain now, and then I'll please see how I can find a positive path. How can this all develop positively?

And if we manage to turn complaining into something that helps us move forward, then we can complain a little too.

How did you come to support other people as a mental and motivational coach?

I've actually been approached quite often by people who say, "You radiate such energy. You simply motivate me with your personality." I'm a very perfectionist, so I have to be able to do something before I do it, even though I've actually already done it. So I actually decided to pursue coaching through the Coaching Association.

Now I can apply my motivation in a well-founded way, along with the psychological knowledge and all the methodologies I've learned. It was important to me to be able to combine these two.

How can we live more positively and happily?

There's a wonderful tip. If I say, "I'm always annoyed that my husband does this or that, or that my son does this or that. Or my colleague. Whoever." Then I ask: Do you think this person got up this morning and thought about what they could do to annoy you? It's not usually the case; this person is just the way they are. And if I stop taking it against myself and instead see, okay, I can only change myself, I can then simply look at this path from the other side.

If I consciously direct my thoughts toward the positive, I can achieve a lot. And that doesn't mean there aren't stupid things that make our lives and our thoughts difficult. But then, okay, we have this situation, it's inevitable, and we can't change it. So, what's the next step to accepting it?

Let's allow ourselves to let things be as they are, and then avert them, redirect them, and make our thoughts positive. What good can come from this? My mother once said, there's nothing so bad that something good can't come out of it.

Do you also have a specific evening routine?

I've learned to listen to myself, so I don't really have a routine. Instead, when I notice I'm tired in the evening, I go to bed, even if the movie isn't over or I haven't finished reading the book yet. But I also love, when everything around me has quieted down, just sitting on my couch and experiencing the silence. Observing the silence is truly wonderful, and then I go to bed.

What is your favorite tip for sleeping better and feeling better?

Just try something new. I like to say: Happiness is a matter of practice. Sometimes it doesn't come naturally, and you need support. My recommendation is to simply have the courage to seek out that support. How does it feel when I talk to a mentor, coach, consultant, etc. And when I use it as a good feeling and it helps me sleep better, then it is something that can really be beneficial.
